Carousel planning guide

Instagram Carousel Guide: Plan Every Slide

An Instagram carousel is one feed post containing up to 20 photos and videos. Start with a cover that makes a specific promise, give every later slide a separate job, and finish before the sequence starts repeating itself.

A practical seven-slide plan

  1. Cover: name the subject and promise the result.
  2. Context: show why the subject matters now.
  3. Detail: make the first useful point visible.
  4. Proof: show the example, process, or evidence.
  5. Contrast: explain what changes, fails, or gets overlooked.
  6. Application: give the reader a small action to try.
  7. Close: state one next step without adding a second topic.

Seven is a planning aid, not an Instagram rule. A before-and-after may need two slides. A careful tutorial may need twelve. Remove any frame that repeats the previous one.

Make the cover state the bargain

A portrait can open a useful carousel when the sequence has a clear subject: how an outfit came together, the stages behind a finished look, or a short account of one day. The cover should tell a stranger which of those stories follows. "Recent photos" leaves the viewer sorting out the point alone.

Keep the cover readable at grid size. Use a short line of text only when the image cannot state the subject by itself. The cover still needs to work as the permanent thumbnail on your profile, so avoid tiny labels, edge-to-edge copy, or a teaser that becomes meaningless once the moment has passed.

Give each slide one job

Write the job of every slide before designing it. If slides four and five both say "add more detail," combine them or make the distinction concrete. A product carousel might move through overview, scale, material, use, and care. A tutorial might use starting point, action, check, correction, and finished result.

One caption and one location belong to the entire post, while Instagram lets you tag people in individual photos. Put shared context in the caption. Keep slide text focused on what someone needs at that point in the sequence. The caption writing guide helps separate the opening line, supporting context, and final action.

Turn a place into a sequence, not a dump

A strong travel image can orient the reader, but twenty attractive views still need an order. Start with the location or central moment. Follow with a detail that changes how the place is understood, then movement, people when permission allows, and one practical observation. End when the story has arrived somewhere.

A photo dump can stay informal without becoming random. Date, route, activity, or mood can provide the thread. If the images belong to different stories, split them. The grid planner can help decide whether the cover belongs on the profile you are building.

Prepare the crop before upload

Instagram's live Help Center says one orientation applies to every slide. Choose portrait, square, or landscape before export, then preview each asset in that same frame. Check faces, text, hands, product edges, and any visual comparison that loses meaning when cropped.

Instagram supports up to 20 photos and videos in one carousel. Mixed media can help when motion explains something a still cannot, but carousel videos are not Reels and do not appear in the Reels tab. Use the format because the sequence helps the idea, rather than as a workaround for Reel distribution.

Before sharing, review the order, individual tags, caption, location, and image descriptions. After publication, Instagram says you can reorder or remove existing items, but you cannot add a missing slide. Save your source files and final sequence outside the app.

Sources and freshness

The 20-item limit, shared orientation, editing controls, one caption and location, per-photo tags, and treatment of carousel videos were checked September 25, 2026 against Meta's live Instagram carousel Help Center page. The page displays a 2026 copyright notice but no material-update date, so this guide records the check date rather than inventing a publication date. Buffer, Hootsuite, and Sprout Social carousel guides were reviewed for competing intent; their unsupported performance promises and stale limits were not used as product facts.

Instagram carousel questions

How many photos or videos can an Instagram carousel include?

Instagram's current Help Center says one carousel can include up to 20 photos and videos. Use only the slides the idea needs; the limit is capacity, not a target.

Can each carousel slide have a different shape?

No. Instagram says the orientation you choose, square, portrait, or landscape, applies to every photo and video in the post. Prepare the set in one ratio before uploading so important details are not cropped.

Can I reorder an Instagram carousel after posting?

Instagram's Help Center says you can edit a published carousel and long press to reorder its photos or videos. You can also remove items, but you cannot add new ones after publishing.

Do carousel videos appear in the Reels tab?

No. Instagram says videos inside a carousel are not treated as Reels and do not receive Reels features or placement in the Reels tab.
