Short update guide

Instagram Notes Guide for 2026

An Instagram Note is one short update of up to 60 characters. It appears at the top of Instagram messaging and above your profile picture for the audience you choose, then disappears after 24 hours. Use it for one timely thought or question that can sensibly continue in a private reply.

Share a Note in four steps

  1. Open Instagram Messages or your profile and tap your Note above the inbox or profile picture.
  2. Choose Leave a new note and write one note of up to 60 characters.
  3. Select the audience that should see it. Read the choice before sharing rather than relying on memory.
  4. Tap Share, then return to the inbox if you want to review likes or answer replies.

A new Note replaces the current one. The old Note does not become a visible archive on your profile, so copy any wording you need to keep before replacing it.

Ask one question a music follower can answer

A piano account has an obvious subject for a small question: "Which song should I learn next?" The profile supplies the musical context, and the Note asks for one choice. There is no need to explain the whole repertoire inside the 60-character limit.

Use replies as private suggestions. They do not act as public votes. If several people request the same song, that can inform a later post. It does not prove that the post will perform well. Keep names and private messages out of any public follow-up unless the sender has agreed to be quoted.

Keep event detail in the post it belongs to

A music-promotion account might write "Which Friday release are you playing first?" or "Tonight's lineup is posted. Any questions?" The Note starts the conversation. The public post should still carry the date, venue, artist credits, access information, and any later corrections.

Avoid putting a safety-critical change only in a Note. It expires, can be replaced, and reaches only the selected audience. A cancelled show, changed entrance, or accessibility update needs a stable public source that attendees can reopen and share.

Skip vague bait such as "big news soon" unless there is a real update and a clear place to find it. The caption writing guide is a better fit when the idea needs context, proof, or a lasting explanation.

Choose Notes, Stories, or a channel by the job

Use a Note for a short text update that invites a private response. Use the Instagram Stories guide when the image, video, sticker, or sequence carries the idea. Use the broadcast channels guide for a public opt-in stream of recurring creator updates.

People can mute Notes separately from posts and Stories, and Instagram does not notify them when they do. Treat that as a useful boundary. Repeating the same sales line every day gives people a reason to remove the surface from their inbox.

Review the replies you can actually see. Public profile visitors cannot see Note response volume, private conversations, profile visits, or sales. Record those results inside your own account rather than turning a handful of replies into a public performance claim.

Sources and freshness

The one-Note limit, inbox and profile placement, 24-hour lifespan, replacement behavior, 60-character limit, audience selection, private replies, and like visibility were checked September 29, 2026 in Instagram's live Notes help page. Instagram does not show a material-update date on that page, so this guide records the direct check date. The separate mute control was checked the same day in Instagram's Notes mute instructions.

Instagram Notes questions

How long does an Instagram Note last?

Instagram says a Note remains visible for up to 24 hours. You can delete it sooner, and publishing a new Note replaces the one already shared.

How long can an Instagram Note be?

The current limit is 60 characters. Write one complete update or one easy question rather than squeezing a caption into the space.

Who can see my Instagram Note?

Instagram asks you to select an audience before sharing. Check that choice every time, especially when the update is meant only for Close Friends rather than followers you follow back.

Are replies to Instagram Notes public?

No. A reply starts a private conversation between the person who replied and the person who shared the Note. Only the author can see who liked or replied to it.
