How to Recover Deleted Instagram Posts, Reels, and Stories

Open Instagram's Recently Deleted area as soon as you notice a missing post, Reel, video, or Story. Most content has a 30-day recovery window. A Story that was not in the Stories archive may remain for only up to 24 hours.

Check the deadline before troubleshooting anything else

Deleted Instagram photos, videos, Reels, and Stories move out of public view immediately. Instagram keeps most of them in Recently Deleted for 30 days. A deleted Story that was not in the Stories archive can disappear from Recently Deleted after up to 24 hours.

Deleted messages cannot be restored through this area. Do not spend the recovery window reinstalling the app, editing the profile, or waiting for the post to return on its own. Check Recently Deleted first.

Recover portfolio work before the window closes

Nia's public profile presents freelance modeling and fashion-led images. For an account that works as a portfolio, one deleted shoot can remove evidence a client expected to find. Check the Posts category and the Reels and videos category separately rather than assuming the item is gone because the first screen is empty.

Restore the exact item first, then inspect the live profile before making any other changes. If the deletion was deliberate but the cover no longer fits, use the archive workflow after recovery. That preserves a reversible choice without leaving the post public.

Restore a post, Reel, video, or Story

  1. 1. Confirm the account. Switch to the profile that originally published the content.
  2. 2. Open Your activity. From the profile menu, choose Your activity, then find Removed and archived content.
  3. 3. Open Recently deleted. Instagram may hide this option when the account has no recently deleted content.
  4. 4. Choose the correct category. Check Posts, Reels and videos, and Stories as needed.
  5. 5. Open the item and its options. Choose Restore, then confirm Restore again.
  6. 6. Verify the public result. Reopen the post from the profile and check its media, caption, cover, and links.

Recover business posts before checking whether they are current

Matt Leitz's public profile centers business growth and AI education. A deleted launch post or explainer can break the context for replies, links, and follow-up posts. Restore an uncertain deletion before the recovery period ends, then decide whether the information still deserves a place on the live profile.

Check every date, offer, link, and claim after recovery. Restoring the media does not make an old announcement current. If the post should remain available for the account owner but no longer appear publicly, move it to the archive after confirming that the recovery succeeded.

Reels can carry the same problem. Confirm the cover and caption after restoration, then use the Instagram Reels workflow when the subject needs a corrected follow-up rather than an old video returning without explanation.

If the item does not appear

  • Check the age. A post, Reel, or video older than 30 days will not remain in Recently Deleted. An unarchived Story may be gone after 24 hours.
  • Check every category. Reels and videos are separate from Posts, and Stories have their own view.
  • Check the account. Teams and creators often manage several profiles in the same app.
  • Check whether it was a message. Deleted messages cannot be recovered through Recently Deleted.

Permanent deletion has a longer backend process

Instagram says content leaves the account immediately, but completing the deletion process may take up to 90 days. Copies may remain in backup storage for disaster recovery, software errors, or data loss. Instagram may also retain information for legal issues, terms violations, or harm prevention. That backend timeline does not extend the in-app recovery window.
