Instagram Insights: Read the Numbers and Plan the Next Post

Instagram Insights shows Views, Interactions, New followers, and Content you shared. Pick one question, use one timeframe, and compare posts that had the same job. That gives you a decision you can use, while a dashboard full of unrelated numbers usually does not.

What the account overview shows

Instagram's current overview groups account activity into Views, Interactions, New followers, and Content you shared. You can open the detail behind each group and choose a preset or custom period within the past 90 days.

Views count times content was played or displayed. Viewers count unique accounts that saw content on screen. Interactions collect actions such as likes, comments, saves, and shares. Accounts engaged counts the unique accounts behind those actions. Keep those definitions beside any report because similar names measure different things.

Start with one question and one timeframe

Write the decision before opening Insights. "Which recent portrait idea should become a short series?" is useful. "How did my account do?" is too broad. Choose a period that contains enough comparable posts, then record the posts, their intended job, and the metric that answers the question.

A seven-day view can help with a short campaign. A 30-day view is usually better for a modest publishing rhythm. Use the full 90-day window when posting is infrequent or you need several examples of the same format. Keep the period unchanged while comparing the posts.

Compare content by the job it was meant to do

Label each post before sorting by a metric. A visual introduction may be built for views. A useful reference may earn saves. A conversation prompt may produce comments. A post that explains the account promise may lead to follows. One universal score would flatten those different jobs into a bad comparison.

Compare a small group with the same job and format. Note one visible difference in the subject, opening image, caption, or next step. The result is an observation about this account and period. It does not prove that Instagram favors the color, topic, or posting time.

A review sheet you can finish in 20 minutes

  1. Choose one question and a timeframe within the past 90 days.
  2. Pick three to five posts with the same job and a reasonably similar format.
  3. Record views or viewers, the relevant interactions, and any follows shown for the content.
  4. Watch or read every post again and name one visible difference.
  5. Plan one new post that tests that difference while keeping the subject and format close.

Know when Instagram withholds a breakdown

Instagram says audience demographics need a preset timeframe and more than 100 accounts reached. Follower trends, locations, age ranges, and active times appear when the account has at least 100 followers. If a seven-day view has too little data, try a longer preset such as 30 or 90 days.

Instagram also labels some metrics as estimated and in development. Save the timeframe and metric definition with your note. A change in the interface or counting method can make an old report and a new report look more comparable than they are.
