Instagram Live: Schedule, Start, and Share a Broadcast

Instagram Live connects you to your followers in real time. Only a public account with 1,000 followers or more can start one, and you can schedule a broadcast from one hour up to 90 days ahead. Decide the single promise of the broadcast, let the reminders do their work, and plan what the recording becomes once the live video ends.

Check that you qualify, then choose the format

Instagram's Start a live video page states the rule plainly: only users with a public account and 1,000 followers or more can start a Live video. Live is off by default for Teen Accounts, and teens under 16 need a parent or guardian to turn it on.

From the mobile app you tap Create and choose Live. From a computer you open Instagram.com, click Create, select Live video, and use the unique URL and stream key with Live Producer and streaming software over a custom RTMP connection. Practice mode shows the broadcast to nobody while Public takes you live to your followers.

Give the broadcast one promise

Ray Chen shares concert footage, tour moments, and music-education projects with a large public following. An account like that earns an audience for a fixed time because the promise is specific: a lesson, a rehearsal, a question-and-answer, or a first listen. Vague streams lose people before anything happens.

Write the title as that promise, since the title is what appears on the scheduled post, in the reminder, and on your profile. A viewer should know what they get and roughly how long it runs before they tap the reminder.

If the goal is discussion rather than performance, the Instagram Broadcast Channels guide covers the one-way format that reaches followers without a live camera.

Announce early and let reminders work

confidon is a bass-music producer with bookings in the bio and live-set photos from venues and a talent group. For a performer who already plays out, a scheduled Live is the between-shows channel, and the schedule tool does the reminding so the set does not depend on a last-minute post.

Instagram lets you schedule from one hour up to 90 days ahead, and it sends a notification 24 hours and 15 minutes before the time you chose. Your soonest scheduled live video then appears on your profile below your profile picture, where you can tap it to share, edit, or cancel it.

You can change the start time up until 45 minutes before the scheduled moment, which is enough room to fix a mistake but not enough room to move an event silently. Tell the audience if the time shifts.

If you want to promote the Live as an ad, schedule that ad at least two hours before the broadcast. Instagram notes that doing so can help prevent delays before the ad begins delivery.

Decide what the recording becomes

LEONL plays drums, guitar, and bass and shares covers and his own releases, so one finished recording already turns into several posts. Plan the same reuse for a Live before you start it, because the replay behaves differently from the broadcast.

When the live video ends you can tap Share as reel to publish a replay, or share it later from your Live archive. The replay does not carry the original likes or comments, the viewer count restarts, and you cannot edit or trim it before it goes out. You can also download it to your camera roll.

If an old promotion outlives its event, Instagram's archive guide confirms that archiving hides a post from your profile while keeping its likes and comments. Use it for cleanup rather than deletion.

Run it and close it cleanly

  1. 1. Confirm eligibility and format. Check the follower requirement, then pick mobile or Live Producer on a computer.
  2. 2. Schedule with a real title. Choose the start time and write the promise the reminder will carry.
  3. 3. Share once. Post or add a Story so the reminder option reaches people.
  4. 4. Manage comments. Use the live comment controls to keep the room on topic.
  5. 5. End in the right order. If you stream from a computer, end the broadcast in Instagram Live Producer before you stop the streaming software.
  6. 6. Publish the replay. Share as a reel or from the Live archive, knowing the likes and comments do not travel with it.

Source and freshness

The eligibility rule, start flow, scheduling window, reminders, and replay behavior were checked against Instagram's Start a live video page, checked October 19, 2026, its Schedule a live video page, and its Share a live video after it ends page. The example profiles and their visible posts were checked the same day. Live access can change by account and app version, so confirm the controls shown to your own account before a broadcast.
