Instagram Reels Friends Tab: Activity and Privacy
The Friends tab in Reels shows public content that friends liked, created, reposted, or commented on, along with recommendations from Blends they started. You can choose who sees your likes, hide your likes and comments from the Friends tab with its activity control, and mute activity bubbles from specific people you follow.

What the Friends tab changes
Tap Friends at the top of Reels to open it, then tap Reels to return to the usual feed. The tab creates a social route to public Reels. A Reel may appear because a friend made it, liked it, commented on it, or reposted it. Meta also includes recommendations from Blends that friends started.
Treat each activity label literally. A like can mean appreciation, acknowledgment, bookmarking, or simple interest. It does not prove that the person agrees with every claim in the Reel. Read the original post and creator context before drawing a conclusion from the activity bubble.
Make the Reel understandable outside your profile
@crimmilly's cached art post has a subject that can stand on its own, but a viewer arriving through a friend's activity still needs the artist and idea quickly. Open with the work, name the process or decision being shown, and keep the original creator attached to the post.
Do not assume the viewer knows the series, previous post, or account promise. Give the first seconds a complete thought. The caption can supply materials, context, and the next place to look. The Instagram Reels guide has a full opening and editing check.
Friends-tab distribution remains a recommendation surface. A visible friend interaction explains one route into the Reel; it does not expose private reach data or promise that another post will travel the same way.
Choose the audience for your likes
@carolina.hyyh's cached pet and everyday-life image shows how social activity carries context. Liking a friend's personal Reel may simply acknowledge the moment. Decide whether that activity should be visible to everyone, people you follow, close friends, or no one.
Instagram's current Help Center route starts at your profile: open the menu, choose Likes you've made, and select the audience. The setting controls who can see likes you make on other people's posts and Reels. The account that posted the content can still see your like regardless of the audience choice.
Meta also provides a Friends-tab activity control for your likes and comments, plus the option to mute activity bubbles from selected people you follow. Review the labels in your current app before saving because the general likes audience and the Friends-tab display control answer related but different privacy questions.
Use the smallest control that solves the problem
- Change your likes audience when you want a standing rule for who can see what you like.
- Use the Friends-tab activity control when you want to hide your likes and comments from that tab.
- Mute one person's activity bubbles when their updates crowd the tab but you still want to follow them.
- Return to the regular Reels tab when you want recommendations without the Friends view.
These controls do not make a public Reel private. Use the Close Friends guide when the post itself needs a smaller audience, and the Favorites guide when you want chosen accounts to appear higher in your Home feed.
Sources and freshness
Meta launched the Reels Friends tab globally on August 6, 2025 and documented its content sources, tab switcher, activity controls, and per-person activity-bubble mute. Instagram's current like-visibility instructions list Everyone, People you follow, Close friends, and No one, and explain that the original posting account still sees the like. Both sources were checked October 12, 2026. Both example profiles, their live Instagram pages, Roastagram analyses, and cached recent-post images were checked October 12, 2026.
