Instagram Favorites: Curate the Accounts You Want to See
Instagram Favorites is a private list of up to 50 accounts. Their posts can appear higher in your Home feed, and you can open a separate Favorites view when you want a narrower feed. Choose accounts for a specific reason, then edit the list as your interests change.

Build a Favorites list with a job
- Pick one reason for using the list, such as close friends, working peers, local events, or a subject you are studying.
- Add only accounts whose new posts serve that reason.
- Open the separate Favorites view when you want that narrower stream.
- Remove accounts that no longer fit. Removing one does not unfollow it.
- Review the list when it becomes another crowded feed.
Favorites changes what you choose to notice. It does not prove that a creator's posts will reach every follower or perform better with a wider audience.
Favorite an ongoing project you want to follow
Sara's live bio points to photography, writing, travel, and work on another named project. That gives a viewer a concrete Favorites decision: add the account when those continuing updates are useful enough to notice promptly.
The reason should be more precise than liking one photograph. You might want to follow the progress of the project, keep up with visual field notes from a place, or study how the writing and images work together. If that reason disappears, remove the account from Favorites without unfollowing it.
Avoid treating the list as a ranking of people. It is a feed tool. A friend can matter to you without posting material you need near the top of Home, while an unfamiliar creator can earn a place because their current series is useful.
Use a clear profile promise as the filter
River's public bio centers music. A listener who wants new music posts has a plain reason to use Favorites, while someone following for an unrelated topic does not. The profile promise makes the choice easier.
Try finishing this sentence before adding any account: "I want to notice this account because..." Name the subject or relationship. If the answer is only habit, guilt, or follower count, leave the account in the regular feed and keep the limited list for clearer priorities.
A creator cannot see this private preference and should not ask followers to report it as proof of loyalty. Public engagement, private Favorites choices, and actual business results are different kinds of evidence.
Separate Favorites from other feed controls
Home feed
Favorites can make selected accounts appear higher among the other posts and recommendations Instagram chooses for Home.
Favorites view
Open this view for posts from the accounts on your list, with newer posts at the top according to Instagram's current Help Center.
Following view
Use Following when you want a broader stream from accounts you follow rather than the smaller Favorites list.
Your Algorithm
Use topic controls when the issue is recommendation interests across Feed, Reels, and Explore, rather than selected followed accounts.
The Your Algorithm guide covers recommendation topics. Favorites is the simpler account-level control.
Source and freshness
Instagram's Favorites Help Center page, checked October 4, 2026 says selected accounts can appear higher in Home, the list supports up to 50 accounts, list changes do not notify those accounts, and removing one does not unfollow it. The live app remains the source for the controls available to your account.

Posts from that account can appear higher in your Home feed. Instagram also provides a separate Favorites view for posts from the accounts on your list.
How many Instagram Favorites can I have?

Does Instagram notify someone when I favorite them?

Does removing a Favorite unfollow the account?
No. Removing an account from Favorites changes your feed preference and does not unfollow it.
