Instagram Mute: Hide Posts, Stories, Notes, or Messages

Instagram Mute lets you hide selected updates without unfollowing the account. Posts, Stories, Notes, and message notifications use separate controls, so choose the surface that is crowding your attention instead of muting everything by habit.

The direct answer

Open the account's profile, tap Following, then choose Mute. Switch on Posts or Stories according to what you want to hide. Notes have a separate control, and muting a message thread silences its notifications rather than changing the account's Feed posts.

You still follow the account, the account will not be notified by Instagram, and you can open the profile whenever you want. Muting also does not stop the account from seeing, liking, or commenting on content it could already access.

Mute the surface, not the whole relationship

Virgenya's current profile moves among self-portraits, film images, and place-based work. A follower might value those considered grid posts but want fewer day-to-day Story updates during a busy week. Muting Stories alone keeps the posts available in Feed while removing the Story bubble from the top of it.

Start with the smallest useful change. If Stories are the problem, leave Posts alone. If the Feed posts no longer suit what you want to see, mute Posts and keep Stories. Visit the profile after a week and check whether the choice improved your Feed or simply hid an account you no longer want to follow.

For accounts you actively want to notice, use Instagram Favorites instead. Favorites raises selected accounts in Home and provides a separate feed, while Mute removes selected surfaces from view.

Know what Mute leaves untouched

The concise personal profile at 101caos shows why the boundary matters. Muting changes one viewer's Instagram experience. It does not edit the account's bio, remove either follower, hide the viewer's posts from that account, or limit comments and messages.

Choose Restrict when one account's comments or messages are the problem. Choose Block when the account should lose access to your profile and direct contact. Mute belongs to a simpler decision: which updates do you want Instagram to stop putting in front of you?

Message controls are separate too. Muting a chat can silence message or call notifications, but it does not erase the conversation or block new messages. Check the chat settings rather than assuming a Feed mute covers Direct.

Use a two-minute mute check

  1. Name the exact interruption: Feed posts, Stories, Notes, message alerts, or calls.
  2. Mute only that surface. A post or Story mute does not automatically mute Notes.
  3. Keep the follow if you still want occasional access to the profile or want to revisit it later.
  4. Use Restrict or Block instead when access and interaction, rather than your own Feed, need to change.
  5. Review the choice after a week. Unmute the surface if you miss useful updates.

Sources and freshness

Instagram's Mute or unmute guide, checked October 7, 2026 documents separate controls for posts, Stories, messages, and calls, confirms that Instagram does not notify the muted account, and distinguishes muting from unfollowing. Instagram also documents the separate Notes mute control. The example profiles and their visible posts were checked October 7, 2026.

Instagram Mute questions

Does Instagram tell someone when I mute them?

No. Instagram says it does not notify an account when you mute it.

Can I mute Instagram Stories but keep seeing posts?

Yes. Posts and Stories have separate mute controls. Notes and message notifications also need their own controls.

Can a muted account still comment on my posts?

Yes. Mute changes what you see from the account. It does not stop that account from viewing or interacting with content it can already access.

Is muting the same as unfollowing?

No. You still follow a muted account. You can visit its profile and view its posts directly, and you can unmute each surface later.
