Instagram First Draft for Reels
Instagram First Draft trims your selected videos into a starting Reel. You can review the result, then reorder, remove, or trim clips before continuing to the full editor. Instagram's Help Center says the feature is currently available in the Instagram app on an iPhone.

Make a First Draft from your Reels gallery
- In Instagram, tap Create, choose Reel, and select one or more videos from your gallery.
- Tap Next, then tap First draft.
- Wait for the cut, watch it from the beginning, and inspect every transition.
- Tap Next for the full editor, or share only after the sequence, audio, cover, and caption are ready.
You can also record in Instagram's camera and choose First Draft after recording. The control handles an initial trimming pass. It does not decide what your Reel should mean.
Let it clear pauses, then rebuild the rhythm
An account built around edits depends on rhythm, reaction, and the exact relationship between clips. Automatic trimming can remove dead space, but it cannot know which held look, beat, or pause gives the next cut its force.
Watch the generated sequence once without touching it. On the second pass, mark every cut that changes the intended emphasis. Restore a pause when it carries meaning, shorten repeated setup, and move the strongest visual turn earlier only when the story still makes sense.
Keep the source footage. A reversible in-app edit is useful, but preserving the untrimmed clips gives you room to change direction after you see the whole Reel.
Protect the decisive moment in action footage
Motorsport footage can contain a long approach followed by one short move that explains the clip. Pause removal may help with a talking introduction, yet the useful part of an action sequence can sit inside footage that looks repetitive to an automatic first pass.
Choose clips with one clear job: establish the corner, show the move, or explain what happened. After First Draft, check that the viewer still sees enough approach to understand the action. A fast cut is wasted when it removes the evidence.
For commentary, keep names, event details, and claims tied to a source you can verify. First Draft changes the edit. It does not verify what the footage shows.
Review five decisions before sharing
- Sequence: can a new viewer follow the idea without knowing what happened before filming?
- Trims: did the cut remove a useful breath, reaction, label, or setup?
- Audio: do speech, music, and ambient sound begin and end where they should?
- Cover: does the selected frame explain the subject at profile-grid size?
- Context: does the caption add the names, credits, or explanation the video cannot carry?
The first generated cut is a draft by design. Treating it as finished gives a speed tool responsibility it does not have.
Choose the in-app shortcut or a full editor
| Need | Start with | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Remove pauses from a simple multi-clip Reel | First Draft | It creates a reversible starting cut inside Instagram. |
| Precise layers, graphics, sound, or client review | A fuller editor | The project needs control beyond an initial trim. |
| Test an unfamiliar idea with non-followers | Trial Reel after editing | Testing distribution is a separate decision from making the cut. |

TechCrunch independently reported the iPhone-first rollout and access points on August 25, 2026.
