Instagram Original Content: A Practical Checklist
Instagram describes original content as work you made or third-party material you changed with a meaningful creative contribution. A border, watermark, subtitles, or credit alone do not make a repost original. Use this checklist to find the part of a post that is unmistakably yours before you publish.

The short originality test
Ask what remains if your contribution is removed. If the photo, carousel, or reel is virtually the same, add a real point of view, information, story, performance, or visual treatment. If you only want to pass along someone else’s work, use Instagram’s repost or Story-sharing controls so the source remains clear.
What Instagram currently counts as original
You made it
A photo or video you shot, with your own creative decisions.
You designed it
A visual story, photo series, explainer, or other piece you produced.
You transformed it
Third-party material with new context, information, narration, humor, or graphics that meaningfully change it.
A six-question pre-publish check
- Source: did you make the central photo, footage, illustration, or design?
- Contribution: if you used someone else’s material, what new meaning did you add?
- Substance: does your change go beyond a crop, border, watermark, speed change, subtitles, or fresh caption?
- Rights: do you have the permission or licence required to use the source? Originality guidance does not replace intellectual-property rules.
- Attribution: are collaborators credited with Instagram’s Collab, Remix, or partnership tools where appropriate?
- Alternative: would a repost or Story share preserve the source better than uploading a copy?
Worked examples: weak edit or material contribution?
| Post idea | Weak version | Stronger original contribution |
|---|---|---|
| Industry news carousel | Screenshots of an article with a logo added | An original diagram plus your analysis of what changes for your audience |
| Reaction reel | A source clip with a face in the corner but no added point | A concise critique that pauses the clip and explains evidence or context |
| Meme | A copied image with the same punchline | A new joke or cultural observation that changes how the image is read |
| Customer post | Download and upload it as your own post | Use a Collab when you created it together, or share the original to your Story |
These examples apply Instagram’s published principles; they do not predict how any individual post will be classified.
Review the whole profile, not one post
Instagram says an account that primarily posts unoriginal reels, photos, or carousels may lose recommendation eligibility. Mark the last 30 days of posts as made, materially transformed, collaborative, reposted, or copied. The useful goal is a profile where your own work and point of view are obvious, not a cosmetic edit to every borrowed asset.
If Account Status already shows a restriction, use the recommendation eligibility recovery checklist. For a wider first-impression review, run the 15-minute profile audit.
Sources and freshness
The policy details above were checked on September 17, 2026 against Instagram’s April 30, 2026 original-creators announcement and its Original Content Guidelines. Instagram can update enforcement and product controls, so use Account Status for the decision on your account.
Instagram original content questions
Does crediting the original creator make a repost original?
No. Credit matters, but Instagram says a credit or new caption alone is not a material edit. Use the repost or Story-sharing tools when you want to curate work without transforming it.
Are reaction videos original content?
They can be when the reaction adds a meaningful point of view, narration, context, or creative edit. A reaction that leaves the source virtually unchanged may still be treated as unoriginal.
Do these rules apply to photos and carousels?
Yes. Instagram announced on April 30, 2026 that its originality protections for reels would also apply to photos and carousels.
Does permission guarantee recommendation eligibility?
No. Permission addresses your right to use material, while recommendation eligibility is a separate Instagram distribution decision. Instagram notes limited exceptions for publishers it identifies as having licensing agreements or explicit permission.
Where can I see an originality restriction?
Check Account Status in Instagram. It can show limits on recommendation eligibility and may offer an option to remove content or request a review.
