Instagram grid guide
How to Review Your Instagram Grid
A strong Instagram grid helps a visitor recognize the account’s subject, see credible examples, and choose a next step. Review the first screen as a small portfolio, then check whether recent posts deliver the same promise as the bio.

A five-part grid review
- Write down the account’s promise.
- Check the first visible posts without reading captions.
- Assign each post to a content theme.
- Choose pins that orient a new visitor.
- Check covers, tagged content, and accessibility.
Start with the promise, not the palette
Read the bio and finish this sentence: “Follow this account for…” Then inspect the first screen. A visitor should find evidence for that sentence in several posts. Matching colors can look polished, but they do not explain why the account is useful.
Give each visible post a job
Label each post as orientation, proof, education, personality, offer, or community. The labels need not be evenly distributed. A service business may need more proof, while an entertainer may need more personality. The problem appears when every tile performs the same job or no tile supports the profile’s main promise.
Example: a ceramic studio could show a “start here” introduction, a finished collection, a making process, class dates, student work, and the studio’s point of view. Six different visuals can still tell one coherent story.
Use pins as a visitor path
A practical first set is introduction, best example, and current action. Review pins whenever the offer changes. If your account offers more pin slots, use them for distinct routes, such as a frequently asked question or customer example, rather than several versions of the same sales post.
Review covers at real size
Check Reel and carousel covers on a phone. Important text should remain legible without opening the post, but the image should still make sense when text is missed. Keep a clear focal point, avoid placing essential words near cropped edges, and do not encode a sequence only through color. Add captions or on-screen text where the format needs them.
Use tagged posts with permission and context
Instagram began rolling out a way to add tagged posts to the main profile grid on September 10, 2026. Visibility depends on both accounts’ privacy settings. A post from a private account is not automatically visible to everyone who can see your profile.
For a creator or business, a relevant public collaboration can provide useful proof. Check permission, the cover image, accuracy, and whether the post still represents the account. Availability can vary by region and app version, so treat the control as optional rather than redesigning the whole grid around it.
Do not infer performance from appearance
A grid review can assess clarity and visual choices. It cannot reveal saves, sends, watch time, profile conversion, or follower quality. Use your own Instagram Insights for performance. Avoid public tools that claim to reveal private visitors or hidden behavior.
Run the before-and-after test
Save a screenshot before changing pins or order. Ask someone unfamiliar with the account what it covers and where they would tap next. Make the smallest useful change, then repeat the test. Instagram grid questions
Does an Instagram grid need one color palette?
No. A useful grid makes the account’s subjects and value recognizable even when colors and formats change.
Should I delete posts that do not match?
Usually no. Reorder or pin current work when those controls are available, and archive only when an old post is misleading or no longer appropriate.
What should I pin on Instagram?
Start with an introduction, a strong example, and the current next step, then adapt the set to the account’s goal.
Can I add a tagged post to my main grid?
Instagram began rolling out that option in September 2026, but availability and visibility depend on account, region, and the original poster’s privacy settings.
