Instagram Block: What Changes and What Stays Visible

Blocking removes one account's access to your Instagram profile, posts, Stories, mentions, tags, and direct contact. Check shared group chats and save anything you may need before blocking, because removed likes and comments do not return when you unblock.

The direct answer

Open the account, use the options menu, and choose Block. Instagram may offer to block that account alone or include other existing accounts and accounts they may create. The blocked account is not notified.

Blocking removes its likes and comments from your photos and videos, prevents new mentions and tags, and stops new Direct messages. Existing message threads stay in your inbox, and a shared group chat remains a separate space.

Separate public work from a private access decision

Kaiva's live profile presents poetry and liminal photography to ordinary public visitors. That visible work cannot tell us whether any private interaction is welcome. Blocking is an account owner's decision about a specific person's access, not a public judgment on the subject of the profile.

Use Block when that account should no longer find the profile, view its content while logged into the blocked account, send Direct messages, or add new tags and mentions. Use Restrict when the profile can remain visible but one account's comments and messages need a quieter boundary.

If the situation involves a threat, impersonation, or repeated harassment, preserve the relevant messages or screenshots before changing access. Reporting asks Instagram to review possible rule violations. Blocking sets the immediate boundary.

Check the conversation history before you block

Dristan's current profile documents Opel restoration work, including engine cleaning and cylinder-head preparation. Those practical posts invite questions and advice from other car enthusiasts. If one account should no longer join that conversation, blocking cuts off several routes at once. It also removes that account's existing likes and comments from the owner's photos and videos.

Instagram says unblocking will not restore those likes and comments. Save any interaction you need for a moderation record before blocking. An existing Direct thread remains in the inbox, but neither side can use it for new one-to-one messages while the block is active, and messages sent during the block are not delivered later.

This is different from Hidden Words, which filters selected language across comments and message requests. Block targets an account. Hidden Words targets words, phrases, numbers, and emojis.

Do not overlook shared spaces

Sources and freshness

Instagram's guide to what happens after a block, checked October 7, 2026 documents account options, likes and comments, tags, Direct messages, group chats, and visibility in public shared spaces. Its separate likes and comments guide confirms that unblocking does not restore removed interactions. The example profiles and their visible posts were checked October 7, 2026.

Instagram Block questions

Does Instagram notify someone when I block them?

No. Instagram says people are not notified, though the loss of profile and message access may be apparent when they try to interact.

Do likes and comments return after I unblock someone?

No. Instagram says blocking removes that account's likes and comments from your photos and videos, and unblocking does not restore them.

Can I still see a blocked person in an Instagram group chat?

Yes. Instagram says you can choose to remain in a shared group chat, where you and the blocked account can still see each other's messages.

Does blocking one Instagram account block every account that person owns?

Instagram may offer to block the selected account plus other existing or future accounts linked to that person. Instagram also warns that you may need to block accounts individually in some situations.
