Instagram Pinned Posts: What to Pin and Why
You can pin up to three posts or Reels at the top of an Instagram profile. Give those slots separate jobs: orientation, proof, and a current next step. Three popular posts that all say the same thing waste the most useful row on the profile.

A three-pin plan
Pin 1
Orientation
Tell a first-time visitor what the account does and who it helps or entertains.
Pin 2
Proof
Show the work, result, process, or point of view promised by the bio.
Pin 3
Next step
Point to the current series, shop, booking route, event, or best place to begin.
This order is a starting point. The useful part is the separation of jobs. A visitor should learn something new from each pin.
Pin for a stranger, not an existing follower
Followers saw the post when it was published. The pinned row is mainly a welcome desk for people arriving from search, a Reel, a share, or a mention. Open the profile as if you know nothing about it. Read the bio, then look at the three pinned covers without opening them.
Can you tell what the account is about? Can you see evidence rather than a second promise? Is there a timely route forward? If the row needs old context to make sense, choose clearer posts or revise their covers when the format allows it.
Choose the orientation post
The first pin should reduce uncertainty. A creator can introduce a recurring subject and working style. A product business can show what it makes, where it is based, and who the product suits. A service account can explain the problem it handles and the shape of the service.
An introduction does not have to be a talking-head Reel or a card labelled “Start here.” A strong process video, studio tour, portfolio overview, or concise carousel can orient a visitor without sounding formal. Keep dates, prices, availability, and team details current.
Choose proof that matches the promise
Proof depends on the account. A ceramic studio can show finished pieces in use and enough process to establish that the work is its own. A photographer can show one complete assignment rather than a collage of unrelated favourites. An educator can teach one useful idea well enough that the viewer understands the standard of future posts.
Do not manufacture a customer result or imply that a visual response proves sales. Use client work only with permission. If the best evidence is a quiet post with fewer likes, pin it anyway. Popularity and relevance answer different questions.
Make the third pin current
The third slot can carry the profile's present priority: a collection, application window, tour date, newsletter, current series, or booking process. Give the post enough context to work after someone taps it from the grid. “Link in bio” is weak when the profile contains several links and the caption does not name the destination.
Set a calendar reminder when the offer closes. A stale pin damages trust because it sits in the place visitors expect to be deliberate. Evergreen accounts can use this slot for the clearest route into an ongoing body of work.
How to pin and review a post
- Open the photo or Reel on your profile.
- Open its options menu and choose Pin to main grid.
- Repeat until the intended three posts occupy the top row.
- Check the profile on a second phone or in a signed-out browser.
- Open each pin and confirm that its caption, links, dates, and claims still hold.
Instagram's current Help Center page, checked September 22, 2026, confirms the three-post limit and the “Pin to main grid” control. Controls sometimes vary by account or app version, so use the live Help Center wording rather than an old launch article or a third-party workaround.
Review the row once a month
- Each pin has a different job.
- The three covers are readable at profile size.
- The bio and pins make the same promise.
- Every date, price, location, and availability claim is current.
- The next step points to a working destination.
Continue with the Instagram grid review to check the rest of the opening screen, then use the 15-minute profile audit for the bio, picture, links, captions, and privacy boundary.
Instagram pinned post questions
How many posts can I pin on Instagram?
Instagram currently lets you pin up to three posts or Reels at the top of your main profile grid.
Which Instagram posts should I pin?
A useful starting set is one orientation post, one proof post, and one current next-step post. Each pin should answer a different visitor question.
Does pinning an old post publish it again?
No. Pinning changes where the existing post appears on your profile. It does not create a new post or reset the original publication date.
Should I pin my three most popular posts?
Only when they still explain the account accurately. An old viral post can attract attention while giving a new visitor the wrong idea about what you publish now.
