Instagram grid reorder guide

How to Reorder Your Instagram Grid

Open your Instagram profile, press and hold any post, choose Reorder grid, then drag it into a new position. Use the control to make your current work easier to understand. It changes profile presentation, not the original post date or distribution.

The short version

  1. Open your profile in the latest Instagram app.
  2. Press and hold any post on the main grid.
  3. Tap Reorder grid.
  4. Press and drag each post to the position you want.
  5. Review the first two rows as a new visitor would see them.

Instagram demonstrated this control in its June 8, 2026 release post. The control may still vary by account or app version.

Decide what the top rows need to say

A reorder works best when you can finish one sentence first: “A new visitor should understand that this account helps or entertains them by…” Choose posts that prove that sentence. A polished tile with no connection to the current account promise belongs below a plain but useful example.

Start with three jobs: orientation, proof, and next step. Orientation explains the subject. Proof shows the work, result, process, or point of view. The next step gives a visitor a reason to open another post, follow, visit the bio link, or contact the account. See the nine-tile Instagram grid planner when you want to map more than the first row.

Reorder in four passes

1. Remove confusion from the first row

Move outdated launches, expired offers, and unexplained inside jokes away from the top. Moving a post is reversible, so begin there before considering an archive.

2. Put your clearest evidence near the top

For a maker, that could be a finished piece and a process post. For a consultant, it could be a practical explanation and a documented example. For a creator, it could be the series that best represents the current work.

3. Separate similar covers

Several text-heavy covers in one row can blur together. Alternate formats when that makes individual posts easier to distinguish. Do not manufacture a checkerboard at the expense of clarity.

4. Check the result at phone size

Read every visible cover and inspect each crop. Reordering cannot repair a weak crop or illegible cover. Fix those at the post level when Instagram offers the control, and keep important details away from thumbnail edges.

What reordering does not do

Grid reordering does not republish the post. It does not create a fresh timestamp, send the post back to follower feeds, or guarantee more recommendation reach. It changes the display order on the profile, which can help a visitor find relevant work after arriving there.

Keep profile clarity separate from post distribution. If a moved post gets more profile opens, that can indicate better discovery inside the profile. It does not prove that the reorder changed ranking elsewhere.

Measure one change for two weeks

Before a large reorder, record profile visits, follows, link taps, and views on the posts you plan to move. Keep a screenshot of the old first screen. After the change, compare the same measures over a similar period and note any campaign or unusually popular post that could distort the result.

Ask one person who does not know the account to answer three questions: What is this profile about? Which post would you open first? What would you do next? Their answers often expose a clearer change than matching colors ever will.

Reorder, pin, or archive?

  • Reorder when a useful post deserves a better position.
  • Pin when a post should stay prominent as new content arrives.
  • Archive when a post is outdated, misleading, or no longer appropriate for public view.

Use the least destructive option that solves the problem. You can also run the broader Instagram profile audit before changing the whole profile.

Instagram grid reordering questions

How do I reorder my Instagram grid?

Open your profile in the Instagram app, press and hold any post, choose Reorder grid, then press and drag posts into the positions you want.

Does reordering an Instagram grid repost old posts?

No. Reordering changes where a post appears on your profile grid. It does not republish the post or replace its original publication date.

What should go in the first row of an Instagram grid?

Use the first row to orient a new visitor: show what the account covers, one credible example, and the most useful next step.

What if Reorder grid is missing?

Update the Instagram app and check the main profile grid again. Feature availability can still differ by account or app version, so use pinned posts while you wait.
