Recommendation reset guide

How to Reset Instagram Suggested Content

Instagram lets you clear suggested-content recommendations across Feed, Reels, and Explore from Content preferences. The reset leaves followed accounts, ads, and your data alone. Use it when the whole recommendation mix feels stale, then make your first interactions deliberate because suggestions begin personalizing again right away.

Reset the recommendation mix in five steps

  1. 1. Open your profile. Use the Instagram app on Android or iPhone and tap your profile picture.
  2. 2. Open Content preferences. Tap the menu, then find Content preferences under What you see.
  3. 3. Choose Reset suggested content. Tap Next after reading the explanation.
  4. 4. Review the optional lists. Instagram may offer a review of followed accounts and ad topics before the reset.
  5. 5. Confirm the reset. Tap Reset suggested content once more. Instagram says this action cannot be undone.

The current Instagram Help Center instructions list the same path and state that the control is available in the mobile app.

Decide what you want to see before you reset

rosiveth's public profile has several clear lanes: music, concert memories, flowers, friends, and family. That is a useful model for a pre-reset list. Write down two or three subjects you still want, instead of opening the app after the reset and reacting to whatever appears first.

A reset is broad. If your music recommendations are useful while one unrelated topic keeps returning, use the narrower controls in the suggested-post controls guide. Save the full reset for a recommendation mix that no longer reflects several of your interests.

The reset does not change followed accounts. Review that list separately if old follows keep placing unwanted posts in your regular Feed.

Rebuild with specific, consistent signals

agusz's profile joins outdoor imagery with literary language. A subject this specific is easier to reinforce than a broad label such as lifestyle. After a reset, search for the exact interests you want, follow accounts that stay on those subjects, and save or share posts you genuinely want to return to.

Instagram says suggested posts are informed by your activity, your connections, information about the post and account, the device you use, and activity on Threads. Its current suggested-post explainer names follows, likes, saves, reposts, and comments among the activity signals.

Give the new mix time to react to real choices. Do not like a post merely to tidy the Feed, and do not follow a broad account when only one post matches the subject you want.

Know what the reset leaves unchanged

Part of InstagramAfter the reset
Suggested contentCleared across Feed, Reels, and Explore, then personalized again through new interactions.
Accounts you followUnchanged unless you choose to unfollow during the optional review.
AdsUnchanged by the suggested-content reset.
Posts, messages, and account dataNot deleted by the reset.

These limits matter because deleting the app, clearing a phone cache, or unfollowing everyone solves a different problem. Use Instagram's named control for suggested content and keep the rest of the account intact.
