How to Control Suggested Posts on Instagram

Start with Not interested

Sage's public profile moves among theatre, photography, friends, live music, and personal updates. If Instagram suggests one theatre post you do not want, blocking every suggestion from a varied account would remove more than the single miss. Not interested gives feedback on that post and similar suggestions first.

Tap Options above a Feed post, or tap Options at the bottom right of a Reel, then choose Not interested. In Explore, press and hold a tile or open its Options menu. Instagram's current post-hiding instructions cover Feed, Reels, Explore, and Search.

After Not interested, Instagram may offer account-level controls, an exact-word filter, or the Feed snooze. Choose one only when its wider scope matches what you mean.

Use exact words for a repeated caption topic

Flor's recent captions use specific music references alongside coffee, beach, and birthday posts. A term such as a band name can be filtered precisely. A visual description such as dark aesthetic cannot, because Instagram says this control checks captions and hashtags for the word, phrase, or emoji you entered.

From a suggestion, choose Not interested and then Don't suggest posts with certain words. You can also open Profile, Menu, Content preferences, and Specific words and phrases. Separate multiple entries with commas.

Instagram's specific words and phrases page says a hashtag must match exactly. The list can take up to 24 hours to affect suggestions, does not hide posts from followed accounts, does not apply on instagram.com, and does not scan comments.

Pause Feed suggestions without changing Reels or Explore

Choose Snooze after marking a suggested Feed post Not interested if you want a temporary break. Instagram describes this as a 30-day pause for suggested posts in Feed. It does not serve the same job as a full reset across Feed, Reels, and Explore.

A pause works well when you want a chronological stretch of followed-account posts or need a month without discovery mixed into Feed. If the recommendation mix is wrong everywhere, follow the suggested-content reset guide instead.

Keep recommendation controls separate from followed accounts

Word filters and Sensitive Content Control apply to recommendations from accounts you do not follow. They do not remove posts from people you chose to follow. Use Mute when you want to keep following an account but stop seeing some of its posts, Stories, Notes, or messages.

Use Favorites when the problem is priority rather than removal. Those distinctions keep a recommendation cleanup from turning into an unnecessary account purge.
