Instagram Tags and Mentions: Control Who Can Link Your Profile
Instagram keeps tags and mentions separate. Mentions link your username in Stories, comments, and captions. Tags attach your account to photos and videos. Set an audience for each, then approve tagged posts manually when you want the final say over what appears on your profile.

The direct answer
Open Settings, choose Tags and mentions, then set Who can @mention you and Who can tag you. Each control can allow everyone, people you follow, or no one. Someone outside the selected audience will see that you do not allow that action from everyone.
Instagram normally adds a tagged photo or video to your profile automatically unless it detects possible spam. Turn on manual approval if you want to review tagged posts first. Mentions do not use that approval queue because they are text links in Stories, comments, and captions.
Approve customer photos before they join the brand profile
Speed Queen Home can gain useful customer photos when people tag laundry rooms and machines in use. A tag does not guarantee that the image is accurate, relevant, or suitable for a brand profile. Manual approval keeps the customer's post in its original account while the brand decides whether to display it in Tagged.
Review the image, caption, visible setting, and any product claim before approving it. Ask for permission before reusing somebody else's photo in a new brand post. Approving a tag for the Tagged area does not grant broader reuse rights.
If the post fits the profile, add it deliberately. The tagged posts grid guide explains the separate choice to place an eligible tagged post on the main grid.
Keep project credits open while limiting unwanted media tags
Duravit's design-led posts can involve architects, museums, designers, installers, and project partners. Mentions in a caption or comment give those collaborators a direct profile link and preserve a readable credit trail.
The account may choose mentions from people it follows while requiring manual approval for media tags. That combination keeps expected project credits possible and prevents an unrelated photo from appearing automatically on the profile.
Use Collab posts when two accounts genuinely co-author one post. A mention provides a link and notification. It does not make the mentioned account an author.
Run a monthly tag and mention check
- Review who can mention the account in Stories, comments, and captions.
- Review who can tag the account in photos and videos.
- Turn on manual tag approval if the profile needs editorial or brand review.
- Open pending and visible tagged posts, then remove the account from anything irrelevant or misleading.
- Block a specific account when it should lose both tagging and mentioning access.
A stricter setting can reduce noise, but it can also stop useful customer credits or partner links. Choose the audience from the interactions the account actually wants, then review it when the account's work or risk changes.
Sources and freshness
Instagram's Tags and mentions Help Center guide, checked October 8, 2026 defines the separate controls, lists each audience choice, and says blocked accounts cannot tag or mention you. It also links to Instagram's manual tag approval instructions, checked October 8, 2026. Instagram says tags normally appear automatically unless potential spam is detected, so turn on manual approval when every visible tagged post needs review. The example profiles and visible cached posts were checked October 8, 2026.
Instagram tags and mentions questions

Yes. Instagram offers separate choices for everyone, people you follow, or no one for both tags and mentions.
Can I approve Instagram tags before they appear on my profile?
Yes. Turn on manual tag approval, then review each tagged photo or video before adding it to your profile.
Can a blocked account tag or mention me?
No. Instagram says an account you block cannot tag you or mention your username.
