Instagram Hidden Words: Filter Comments and Message Requests
Instagram Hidden Words filters unwanted comments and message requests before you have to deal with them one by one. Start with the automatic controls, add a short custom list based on abuse or spam you actually receive, and review hidden items so useful replies do not disappear by mistake.

Set up the filter in five steps
- Open Settings, then Hidden Words under the controls for how other people interact with you.
- Keep unwanted-comment filtering on, then decide whether you need the broader comment filter.
- Turn on unwanted message-request filtering if you want likely scams or offensive requests sent to a filtered requests folder.
- Add only repeated words, phrases, numbers, or emojis that have caused a real problem for your account.
- Review hidden comments and spam requests on a regular schedule, then remove custom terms that catch useful conversation.
The filter reduces what you have to read. It does not replace reporting, blocking, or a safety plan when a message includes a threat or repeated harassment.
Protect makeup discussion without filtering the subject itself
Alice presents makeup and photography. A filter for this kind of account should keep ordinary reactions, technique questions, and constructive feedback visible. Broad terms such as makeup, camera, or color would remove the conversation the profile is built to invite.
Build the custom list from specific patterns instead: repeated insults, a scam phrase copied across several requests, or an emoji sequence used to flood the comments. Add one pattern at a time and check the hidden area after the next few posts.
Context still needs a person. A term used abusively in one comment may be part of a harmless product name, photo description, or critique in another. Hidden Words gives the owner a review queue rather than perfect judgment.
Separate nature questions from promotional spam
The visible animal and nature posts can attract real questions about a place, activity, or subject. They can also attract copied product pitches. A useful filter protects the first group while reducing the second.
Do not filter broad nature or animal terms just because they appear in one unwanted pitch. Start with the repeated sentence, contact number, discount code pattern, or emoji run that appears across unwanted requests. The custom list supports words, phrases, numbers, and emojis, so the narrow pattern is usually more useful than a broad topic word.
Review the list when the account changes direction. A phrase that looked irrelevant during one set of posts may become legitimate when the subject or audience changes.
Know what each control does
| Control | Use it for | Check afterward |
|---|---|---|
| Unwanted comments | Common offensive or abusive language | Hidden comments under your posts |
| Unwanted message requests | Likely scams or offensive requests | The filtered requests area |
| Custom words and phrases | Patterns specific to your account | False matches and outdated terms |
| Restrict | Repeated unwanted contact from one account | Comments awaiting approval and message requests |
Use the Instagram Restrict guide when the problem comes from one identifiable account rather than a recurring word pattern.
Source and freshness
The Instagram Hidden Words Help Center page, checked October 5, 2026 says unwanted comments can be hidden automatically, unwanted message requests can move to a separate filtered folder, and a custom list can contain words, phrases, numbers, and emojis. The Instagram hidden-request management page, also checked October 5, 2026 calls that location Hidden Requests. The current settings page also uses the label spam folder, so follow the filtered request control shown in your app. Hidden comments still count, and the sender is not notified.
