Instagram Comment Controls: Choose Who Can Reply

Instagram gives you an account-wide comment audience and a separate switch for individual posts. Keep comments open to the people who can add something useful, then use Hidden Words, Restrict, Block, or a one-post shutdown for the specific problem you are facing.

The direct answer

Open Instagram Settings, choose Comments under the controls for how other people interact with you, then set the audience. A public account can allow People you follow, Your followers, or People you follow and your followers. A private account can choose followers or followers it follows back.

For one post, open its options and choose Turn off commenting. You can also make that choice in Advanced settings before publishing. Turning comments off hides existing comments on that post. Instagram restores them if you turn commenting back on.

Protect a lively music discussion without closing it by default

CLUNK Magazine covers artists, releases, and events. Readers can add recommendations, correct a venue detail, or share another act worth hearing. That conversation belongs close to the post, so an account-wide shutdown would discard part of the magazine's value.

Choose the broadest audience the editors can moderate consistently. A small team may prefer followers plus accounts it follows. A larger publication may keep a wider audience and filter repeated spam with Instagram Hidden Words.

The setting controls eligibility to comment. It does not decide which replies are thoughtful. Review the comment section, answer useful questions, and remove or report content according to what it contains.

Use the one-post switch for a conversation you cannot host

RTL Today Radio publishes concert coverage and new-music updates that naturally invite listener replies. Those everyday posts benefit from open conversation. A sensitive announcement, an active moderation incident, or a post the team cannot monitor may need a different choice.

Turn comments off on that post instead of shrinking the audience for every future post. Existing replies will disappear while commenting is off, so record anything the team needs before making the change. They return if commenting is enabled again.

When one account is causing the problem, use Restrict or Block. Those controls address an account without silencing every listener.

Instagram comment control questions

Can I choose who comments on my Instagram posts?

Yes. A public account can allow comments from people it follows, its followers, or both groups. A private account can allow followers or followers it follows back.

What happens to old comments when I turn comments off?

Instagram hides the existing comments on that post. If you turn commenting back on, the previous comments return.

Can I turn comments off before publishing an Instagram post?

Yes. Instagram places the control in Advanced settings on the screen where you add the caption or location.

Should I turn comments off to stop one account?

Usually no. Restrict or Block targets one account, while turning comments off closes the conversation for everyone on that post.
